Central Park's carriage drive was the place to see and be seen in New York, and this 1862 lithograph by Currier & Ives captures that social ritual at a moment when the park was still young. Its design was laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and the park had opened only over the previous decade, so the scene reflects a new public space in the process of becoming fashionable. Currier & Ives produced many such views for a broad middle-class market, and the print is worth noticing for how it presents leisure, dress and the carefully curved roadways of the park.
