Warder House in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, and the caption cards point to its fireplaces as the focus of the view. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, documented the interiors and architecture of Washington homes around 1900, when many of the city's large residences were furnished in the eclectic styles of the Gilded Age. The cyanotype process, which produces a blue-toned print by exposing chemically treated paper to sunlight, was inexpensive and gave the series a distinctive look. The date is an estimate, so the print is best read as a record of how a Washington interior was arranged at the turn of the century.
