The studio pictured here is a working room inside the Washington, D.C., house of Edward Lind Morse, an artist, on R Street. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the city's best-known photographers of the period, recorded many elegant private residences and their interiors, and her caption card tags this view with fireplaces and interiors. The image is a cyanotype, a contact print process that produces the characteristic white-on-blue tones and was widely used for inexpensive copies from the late 19th century into the early 20th. Because it documents a domestic workspace rather than a public building, it offers a useful glimpse of how artists furnished and lived in Washington homes around 1900.
