Taken in 1859, this view shows one of the greenhouses on the federal grounds in Washington, the glasshouses that supported the government's botanical garden near the Capitol. The print belongs to the Meigs collection, assembled by Montgomery C. Meigs, the Army engineer who oversaw much of the city's federal building work in the 1850s. Glass-and-iron structures like this one were then a new and prized type of public building, used to grow plants for study, display and distribution. The record's data comes from an old caption card and has not been fully verified, so details of the building's construction are best checked against other sources.
