The Corcoran House stood on the northeast corner of Connecticut Avenue and H Street in Washington, a residence built for William Wilson Corcoran, the banker and philanthropist who founded the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Corcoran collected paintings and sculpture, and the house reflected the private taste of a wealthy Washington family in the late 19th century. The photograph comes from Frances Benjamin Johnston's architectural studies of the capital, which document the city's buildings around 1900. Its caption card lists sculpture and architecture among its subjects, a reminder that the house was as much a showcase for art as a home.
