The photograph shows the Corcoran House at the northeast corner of Connecticut Avenue and H Street in Northwest Washington, the residence of the banker and philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran (1798-1888). Corcoran, who made his fortune in banking, is remembered mainly for founding the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the first art museum in the capital. The picture was taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer known for her detailed records of American buildings and daily life around 1900, so it captures the architecture of a prominent Washington household at the turn of the century.
