Here the subject is Miles Standish, the Plymouth Colony soldier, shown in a reproduction of a painting by Alexander M. Harrison, whose copyright is noted on the record. Standish arrived at Plymouth on the Mayflower in 1620 and served as the colony's military captain, charged with defending the small English settlement. By the late 1890s, when this print is dated, he had become a familiar figure in American popular memory, partly through Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1858 poem *The Courtship of Miles Standish*. As a reproduction, the print shows how a painted image of a colonial figure reached a broad audience.
