Nathaniel Owings, the architect, is shown in this studio portrait made by Stone and Steccati, a San Francisco photography firm, and the caption card's subject tracings mark it as architecture-related. The card records no date, so the sitting cannot be placed with certainty. Owings is best known as a co-founder of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the firm whose postwar office towers, such as Lever House in New York, helped shape American corporate design. The portrait offers a glimpse of one of the profession's most influential figures at a time when his firm was rising to prominence.
