Two half-length studies of a man identified only as John Langston, one turned to the right and the other angled slightly, set this pair apart from the other sitters on this board. The caption card gives no date, and the name is unverified, so the sitter's identity should be treated as tentative. The prints came from the Brady-Handy studio in Washington, D.C., which made formal portraits of officials, politicians and other prominent residents in the years after the Civil War, when such photographs were widely collected and exchanged.
