*Cockade* is a tobacco advertisement, and the record ties it to a color lithograph printed by Heffron and Phelps of New York. The firm was one of several commercial lithographers in the city that turned out colorful advertising in the 1880s. Tobacco makers of that period often distributed such prints as trade cards, package inserts, and shop displays, using bright imagery to make their brands stand out in a crowded market. The record gives a date of about 1885, which is an estimate, so the print is best read as an example of the commercial art of its time.
