This portrait of James O. Davidson is catalogued as a photoprint from about 1906, with the date and the attribution to Bain News Service of New York both marked as unverified on the caption card. Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that supplied photographs of people and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so its images were made to be reproduced quickly for daily publication. The record says little about Davidson himself, so the picture is best understood as an example of the press portraits that agency produced in this period.
