James Ashley is the named sitter of this engraving, though the caption card gives no date and the record has not been independently verified, so both the identity and the print's age should be treated as provisional. The plate is credited to G. Cruikshank, most likely George Cruikshank, the London caricaturist and illustrator who worked for much of the nineteenth century and was known for sharp satirical plates and book illustrations. Portrait engravings of this kind circulated widely as single sheets for a public interested in notable figures. Viewers should look at the engraver's handling of line and expression, which often carried as much character as the likeness itself.
