Here the sitter is identified only by the name "Andres Canon," which the catalog record notes is unverified and taken from a caption card. The print is a photogravure reproduction of a photograph by Edward S. Curtis, who spent roughly three decades from about 1900 recording Native peoples across North America in his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. This example appears as plate 523 in a supplementary volume published around 1924, when Curtis's project was nearing its close. Its photogravure process, which gives the image soft tonal depth, was central to how Curtis presented his subjects to a wide readership.
