Temple Creek, a side canyon in the Utah country that the Powell survey mapped, is the subject of this stereograph, numbered 177 in the series. The card comes from the U.S. Geographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River region, led by John Wesley Powell and A. H. Thompson, which documented the canyon lands of the Colorado Plateau in the 1870s. Stereo cards like this were made to be viewed through a lens, so the rock walls and creek bed appear to recede in depth. The print is an albumen print, a process widely used for survey photographs of the period.
