A December 1951 sitting by Carl Van Vechten, one of the most prolific portraitists of American performing artists in the mid-twentieth century, captures Leontyne Price early in her career. Price, a soprano from Laurel, Mississippi, was then building a reputation in opera and concert work, and she would soon become one of the most celebrated singers of her generation, debuting at the Metropolitan Opera in 1961. Van Vechten's studio portraits of singers, dancers, writers and actors were made with a sitter's public image in mind, so this print offers a glimpse of how a rising artist was presented to the public at the time.
