Vincent Price, who was then working on Broadway, sits for this portrait dated November 11, 1942, during the run of *Angel Street*, Patrick Hamilton's stage thriller about a husband trying to convince his wife that she is losing her mind. The play was known as *Gaslight* in its later film adaptations, and Price's stage work in it helped establish him as a serious dramatic actor before his later fame in horror films. Carl Van Vechten, the photographer, made many portraits of performers, writers and artists in this period, and the gelatin silver print preserves the formal studio style of those sittings.
