Taken on January 12, 1949, this portrait shows Mary Martin, the Texas-born singer and actress who was rising to become one of Broadway's leading stars. Carl Van Vechten, the novelist and photographer known for his large series of portraits of performers, writers and artists, made the picture during the years he was documenting the American stage. Martin soon took the role of Nellie Forbush in Rodgers and Hammerstein's *South Pacific*, which opened on Broadway that spring. The gelatin silver print entered the Library of Congress as part of the Van Vechten estate's gift in 1966.
