Diana Sands appears here as Adelaide Smith in *Tiger*, a role from a stage career that many of her contemporaries admired. Born in New York City in 1934, Sands became widely known on Broadway as Beneatha in Lorraine Hansberry's *A Raisin in the Sun* before moving into film and television. She died in 1973, at 38. Portraits like this one, made to promote performers and document productions, now preserve a record of an actress whose work helped widen the roles open to Black performers on the American stage.
