Gertrude Stein poses before an American flag in this 1935 gelatin silver print, a pointed choice of backdrop for a writer who had lived in Paris since 1903. Carl Van Vechten, the novelist and photographer who was one of her closest friends, made the portrait on January 4, 1935, during Stein's first lecture tour of the United States in decades. Van Vechten photographed her many times, and his estate gave this print to the Library of Congress in 1966.
