This July 1958 portrait shows Robert Morse, born in 1931, at the start of a career that would carry him from the stage to film and television. Carl Van Vechten, the writer and photographer who made the portrait, spent decades photographing performers, writers, and artists, and his sitters often included people on the rise. Morse later won a Tony Award for his role in *How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying*. The print is a gelatin silver photograph from the Van Vechten collection at the Library of Congress, given by his estate in 1966.
