Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest surviving son of Abraham Lincoln, sits in this three-quarter-length pose, a format that showed more of the body than a head-and-shoulders portrait while keeping the sitter's face clear. The image is a carte de visite, a small card-mounted print that was popular in the 1860s and was often traded or collected like a calling card. Robert was a young man during these years, studying at Harvard and then serving on Ulysses S. Grant's staff near the end of the Civil War. Later he became Secretary of War and a prominent public figure, so a portrait from this decade captures him before that longer career.
