Robert Schumann, the German composer of the Romantic era, appears here in a bust portrait turned to the right, a detail that distinguishes this print from the many other likenesses of him in the collection. The image is a photomechanical print issued by Prang & Co. in 1897, a firm known for reproducing artwork and portraits in color for popular circulation at the end of the nineteenth century. Schumann, who lived from 1810 to 1856, was celebrated for piano works and songs such as his cycle Dichterliebe, and by 1897 his reputation was well established, so a colored reproduction of his likeness reflects the late-century appetite for images of canonical musicians.
