The record names the sitter only as Alexander Wedderburn, and its caption card details are unverified, so the identity should be treated with caution. The name is most closely tied to the Scottish lawyer Alexander Wedderburn, later Lord Loughborough and Earl of Rosslyn, who died in 1805, more than a century before this portrait was made, so the sitter is probably a different man. The copyright credit names Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed many officials and local residents in the early twentieth century, which places this print in that city's portrait trade.
