Hotel Seymour stood on West 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan, on a block that filled with hotels, theaters and restaurants as the Times Square district grew in the early 1900s. This photograph, dated about 1911, was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who documented city streets and buildings during that period. Street-level views like this one are valued by historians of urban life because they record storefronts, signage and the everyday character of a neighborhood before later redevelopment changed it.
