Few images capture a turning point in Ottoman politics as directly as this color lithograph, which shows Sultan Abdul-Hamid II opening a new Parliament in 1908. A.H. Zaki made the print for *Cairo Punch*, a satirical publication that used caricature to comment on rulers and public affairs. The caption card's date is unverified, but the subject fits the period after the Young Turk Revolution forced the sultan to restore the constitution and recall a legislature he had suspended about three decades earlier. A ceremony staged by a ruler in those circumstances could be read as either renewal or reluctant concession, and the print invites that question.
