This stereograph shows the great dome of St. Sophia in Constantinople, as the city was known before its 1930s renaming to Istanbul. Justinian's builders finished the church in 537 as the Byzantine capital's cathedral, and after the Ottoman conquest of 1453 it became a mosque, with minarets added around its exterior. The Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1919, and viewed through a stereoscope, its two nearly identical photographs gave American parlor audiences a sense of depth that a flat picture could not.
