This view records the arrival of the round-the-world fliers at Bolling Field, the Army airfield in southeast Washington, on September 9, 1924. That year the U.S. Army Air Service made its attempt at the first aerial circumnavigation of the globe, flying Douglas World Cruiser aircraft in stages from Seattle. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the 1910s and 1920s, produced many views of official events and city scenes. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
