Taken from the Capitol, this view looks across the grounds toward the Library of Congress, whose main building on Capitol Hill opened in 1897 after the collection had outgrown its rooms in the Capitol itself. The National Photo Company, which produced thousands of Washington views for postcards and souvenir sales in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative around 1924. Images like this show how the city's civic buildings were presented to visitors in that period, when the Library's ornate Beaux-Arts facade stood out among the surrounding government buildings. The glass has aged, with streaks and blemishes from the decay of its original coating, which is part of what makes it a record of its time.
