This glass negative records the arrival of the round-the-world flyers at Bolling Field, the Army Air Service airfield in southeast Washington, D.C. In 1924 the Army sent a small fleet of Douglas World Cruisers on a circuit of the globe, and the crews' return to the capital drew crowds and official attention. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's public life in the early twentieth century. Its wear, including streaks and blemishes in the coating, reflects the age of the glass plate itself.
