Looking up into the interior of the Capitol dome, this view shows the cast-iron framework that rises high above the floor of the building. The dome was completed in 1866 to a design by Thomas U. Walter, and its canopy holds Constantino Brumidi's fresco *The Apotheosis of Washington*, painted in the 1860s. The National Photo Company produced a large body of Washington views in the early 1920s, and this glass negative, a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, shows its age in streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coatings.
