Minnie Maddern Fiske is the subject here, pictured in her role as Hedda Gabler, the restless heroine of Henrik Ibsen's 1890 drama, whose boredom and cruelty drive the play toward its grim close. Fiske was one of the most admired American actresses of her era, and her willingness to take on Ibsen at a time when his work was still unfamiliar to many American audiences helped introduce his plays to New York. The portrait was made by the Byron studio in New York, which produced a large body of theatrical photographs in the early twentieth century, and it survives as a silver printing-out print, a process common for studio work of the 1910s.
