Dated 1893 and titled *Easter promenade*, this wash drawing captures the custom of walking out in new spring clothes on the holiday. By the 1890s, attending church and then strolling through town or along a fashionable avenue had become a way for families and couples to show off fresh hats, gloves and parasols after the winter months. Wash drawings, built up from diluted ink or paint over pencil, gave artists soft tonal gradations that suited scenes of crowds and open light. The record does not name the artist, so the figures' clothing and setting are the best guides to when and where the scene was meant to take place.
