Friendship, Love and Truth" sets aside a particular person or place and instead personifies three virtues, which distinguishes it from the many genre scenes the firm produced. Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York around 1874, when the company was printing large numbers of inexpensive images for home walls and parlor albums. Color was usually added by hand, often by workers applying pigments through stencils, so impressions from the same plate could differ in tone. The sentiment of the title made the print well suited to Valentine's Day, when cards and pictures of this kind celebrated affection in exactly these terms.
