Few Currier & Ives prints pair a scripture-style title with a still life of fruit and doves, but "God is Love" does exactly that. The hand-colored lithograph, published in New York around 1874, arranges apples and other fruit in a composed display with birds, a combination the firm sold widely to middle-class households in the 1870s. Its title draws on the New Testament line from 1 John, so the picture reads as a gentle devotional object rather than a simple bowl of fruit. Collectors of the firm's still lifes will note how its bright hand-coloring and careful arrangement reflect the popular taste of the decade.
