Friendship, Love and Truth is an allegorical title, and the name itself explains the print's message: three abstract virtues presented as the foundations of a good life, a theme that suited the sentimental taste of the 1870s. Published in New York around 1874 by Currier & Ives, the firm produced large numbers of inexpensive lithographs, which were colored by hand, often by teams of workers, so that no two sheets were exactly alike. Prints like this one were bought for parlors and as gifts, and their affectionate moral themes made them a natural choice for occasions such as Valentine's Day.
