Virtue and love are joined under the figure of a temperance daughter in this hand-colored lithograph, a pairing that ties moral reform to courtship. Nathaniel Currier issued it from New York before his partnership with James Ives began in 1857, a period when the temperance movement was gaining support among Protestant churches and families. Prints like this were inexpensive enough for parlor walls, and hand coloring means that copies differ slightly in tone. Its place on a Valentine's Day board reflects how sentimental allegories like this one were often exchanged as tokens of affection.
