Among twelve color lithographs in this set, this one pairs humorous verse by George Ade and William Herschell with a drawing by Kin Hubbard, John T. McCutcheon, or Gaar Williams. Issued in 1918, while American soldiers were serving in France, the series teases soldiers' lives through love letters, Valentines, and patriotism. Ade was an Indiana humorist and playwright, and all three artists worked for Midwestern newspapers, so the set reflects the regional wit of its day. It was published by the French Relief Fund, a wartime effort to aid France.
