The title, "Alone! At Last Alone! Hero in Love and War," sets up a joke about a sweetheart finally getting her soldier to herself, and the teasing tone is typical of the comic Valentines that were popular in the decades around 1900. Greeting cards of that era often paired sentiment with humor, and military figures were a favorite subject because a uniform signaled bravery and made a suitor seem worth having. The pairing of love and war in the title reflects how often those two themes were combined in printed valentines of the period.
