A parlor scene with a man presenting a ring makes this stereoview a snapshot of courtship in the late nineteenth century, when stereo cards were a popular form of home entertainment. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two images fuse into a single three-dimensional room, with the figures close enough to feel like guests in the front parlor. Staged domestic scenes like this were often sold in sets, and their props, such as the furniture, drapery and carefully arranged poses, reveal how middle-class households pictured romance and respectability. The Valentine's Day link on this board suggests the card was read as a sentimental gift as much as a picture.
