Few images on this board show the early machinery of motion pictures as directly as this color lithograph, which reproduces one of the painted discs Eadweard Muybridge designed for his zoopraxiscope, a projector that cast hand-drawn sequences of movement onto a screen. Here a couple waltzes in a series of positions, so that a viewer who spun the disc would see the dancers move. Muybridge built on his earlier photographic studies of animals and people in motion, and the zoopraxiscope shows like this one were a popular form of entertainment in the early 1890s. The print is also an early example of how dance and motion became subjects for pioneers of film.
