Lovers Ramble" is a color chromolithograph issued around 1880 by Wm. M. Donaldson & Co., a Cincinnati firm that produced and published lithographic prints. Chromolithography, which layered several stone or metal plates to build up full color, made inexpensive decorative images widely available in the late nineteenth century, and Cincinnati was one of the American centers of the trade. The title and subject headings point to courtship and the "lovers' lane," a sentimental motif that appeared often in popular prints of the period. The image shows how commercial printers turned romance into a familiar, mass-market subject.
