Nathaniel Currier, who ran his New York lithography shop from the 1830s, issued this hand-colored sheet around 1846, when his firm was producing comic and sentimental scenes for a wide public. The title, "The Lovers Reconciliation," points to a quarrel mended, a familiar theme in the courtship stories that filled these inexpensive prints. Hand coloring was applied by workers, often women, who brushed in bright washes of color on each sheet, so no two copies look exactly alike. The print is catalogued as no. 4134 in the Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, a useful reference for tracing its place in the firm's output.
