Titled simply *The lovers walk*, this hand-colored lithograph is one of the many courtship scenes Currier & Ives issued for a mass public in New York in the late nineteenth century. The firm sold its prints cheaply, and color was often applied by hand, with the work divided among several workers, so no two impressions match exactly. Sentimental pairs like this one, shown on a stroll together, gave Victorian buyers an image of romance they could hang at home or send to a sweetheart. The print is catalogued as number 4143 in Gale Research's *Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné*.
