Looking down Main Street, this view shows Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the aftermath of the flood of May 31, 1889, when the failure of the South Fork dam sent a wall of water down the valleys of the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek rivers. The disaster killed more than 2,000 people and left much of the town's business district buried in debris. The caption card's tags point to disaster relief and the Freemasons, who were among the groups that gave aid to survivors. The photographers credited on the print, Langill & Darling, documented the wreckage for public interest. The c1889 date is approximate, so the exact day the picture was taken is uncertain.
