Few disasters of the 1800s marked a single American town as deeply as the flood that struck Johnstown on May 31, 1889. After the South Fork Dam above the city gave way, a wall of water from Lake Conemaugh roared down the valley and killed more than 2,000 people. This view looks east along Main Street, where the flood's damage is plainly visible. The print is credited to the studio of Langill & Darling and dated around 1889, though the caption information has not been fully verified.
