The ruins of the M.J. Kennedy Coal Co. anchor this view looking south from Main Street, recorded in Johnstown about two and a half weeks after the flood of May 31, 1889. That day the South Fork Dam above the city failed, releasing a torrent down the Conemaugh valley that killed more than 2,000 people and wrecked much of the mill town. The June 17 date in the record suggests the scene was photographed while debris and damaged buildings still lay where the floodwaters had left them, making it a useful record of the destruction.
