The caption card for this view looking west from Main Street is tagged with disaster relief and Freemasons, which points to the recovery work that followed the disaster. The dam failure on the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River on May 31, 1889, sent a wall of water down the valley into Johnstown, killing more than 2,000 people and destroying much of the town. Photographs like this one, made in the months after the flood, document the debris and damage that residents and relief workers faced. The record itself is unverified and comes from an old caption card, so details such as the exact date and vantage point should be checked against other sources.
