The view looks east down Main Street in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a few days after the dam failure of May 31, 1889, when a torrent from the South Fork Dam swept through the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek valleys and destroyed much of the mill town. The photograph shows the wreckage piled along the thoroughfare, the kind of debris field that residents and rescue crews faced as they searched for survivors and the dead. Because the picture was taken so soon after the disaster, it records the scale of destruction before cleanup began, and it remains one of the most direct visual records of the flood's aftermath.
