Numbered eleventh in a series, this view shows a scene near Main Street in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the weeks after the flood of May 31, 1889. When the South Fork dam gave way upstream, a wall of water from the Conemaugh River tore through the valley town, killing more than 2,000 people and leaving wreckage piled through its streets. The copyright credit names Langill & Darling, a New York City firm that produced and sold views of the disaster to a public eager to see the damage. The record's location details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the exact spot should be read as approximate.
