Catalogued as the Masonic headquarters during the aftermath of the 1889 Johnstown Flood, this photograph records a relief base in the Pennsylvania mill city. On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam above town failed and sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh Valley, killing more than 2,000 people. Fraternal groups, including the Freemasons, helped organize food, shelter and supplies in the weeks that followed. The caption information comes from an old card and has not been verified, so the building's identity and the exact date should be checked against other sources.
